Ruger 223

Ruger 223 Ranch Rifle

Gun:
This is my second gun that has become my favorite.  We were calling in quite a few doubles and a triples every now an then, so I wanted to be able to shoot quickly.  A semi-automatic looked like a good choice and I planned to shoot it with open sites.   After getting a used Ruger Ranch rifle, I was very disappointed with the accuracy.   Ken had read about some companies that will put a heavy barrel on a Ranch rifle guaranteeing sub moa.  I called a couple of these places and selected Accuracy Rifle Systems out of Odessa Texas.  The cost is not for the feint of heart.  Ken had to prod me for 2 months before I finally gave in.  Was it worth it?  Yes!   I can shoot dime size groups at 100 yards off a Harris Bipod in the prone position and nickel size groups at 200 yards.  The gun is probably capable of even better groups, but the shooter needs to spend more time at the range practicing.
Here is what they did:
Installed a heavy match barrel to the action.  The broach rifled barrels are cut rifled to national match quality.  Mine was cut with a 1x14 twist.  The broach cut barrels are more accurate, smoother internally and seem to pick up much less fouling than conventional barrels (button rifled).
I went with the 4.5 pound trigger on this gun as well.  There is a little bit of play at first, but then the pull is the same as the Ruger 22-250.
Pillar bedding with metal filled bedding compound and floating of the broach barrel was also done.
Ken did the custom paint job on this stock as well.  He used a slightly different pattern on this gun compared to the 22-250.
Scope:
I went for the same Leupold scope on this rifle as my 22-250, only this one was silver to match the stainless steel barrel.  Why mess around with something that works.
Ammo:
Refer to your reloading manuals and always start at the low end when reloading.  BE SAFE!  If you blow up your gun or yourself, it's hard to shoot any coyotes.
